Catching Bait
Yes, to catch the big fish you must catch some bait. To catch your bait you will use bait that you buy at a fish and tackle shop. I use squid or balihoo as my "bait" catcher. Now this is my forte! You will catch bait in depths of 5-15 feet (depth finder = best friend) and around grassy shallows or near reefs. Pick a light-weight fishing rod. That’s it. I know that different rods use different fishing line (holds more or less weight) but in the beginning just getting your rod, putting on your hook, adding the bait and dropping the line is all you need to worry about. To catch bait, use a hair hook. I learned the hard way that it is okay to double and triple knot your hook on the line to ensure that it stays there. If you don’t know the fishing knots (I don’t) just tie a lot! Add your bait to the hair hook (small piece of squid or balihoo), release the bail on the reel and cast (technical word for throwing) your line until you see your bait a few feet under water. Lock the bail and reel in your line a bit. Feel a tug? Pull your rod up a bit to get that hook stuck and start reeling your bait in. Once you can reach the bait, pull the line closer to you and try to remove the hook as gently as possible. Make sure that this is a fish you can actually keep for bait or at all. This is where your habitual fishing friends come in handy! If it’s a yes, congrats! Take your bait and put it in the bait well that should be circulating salt water. Now you’re ready to catch more bait!
